Jobs in Digital Media: A mid January update

The latest output from the UK Office for National statistics (ONS) shows that there are approximately 34,000 people employed in the digital sector in the UK.  Here’s an overview of the market in January - it’s not as gloomy as the weather outside!

The UK digital jobs market is experiencing some shifts. Here's a summary:

  • Slight Decrease in Employment: Employment in the digital sector has decreased slightly compared to the previous year.  It’s down by approximately 3% - far lower than the overall marketplace.

  • High Demand, Evolving Skills: Despite the decrease, there is still high demand for digital skills. However, the specific skills in demand are constantly evolving.  When applying for jobs, there’s increasing evidence that being a “specialist” rather than a “generalist” is really important.

  • Focus on Emerging Technologies: There's a growing emphasis on emerging technologies like AI, cloud computing, cybersecurity, and data science.  If you have experience in these areas, make sure these feature in your search on job boards such as digitalmediajobs.co.uk and other platforms such as LinkedIn.

  • Skills Gap: A significant skills gap persists, with many employers struggling to find and retain candidates with the necessary expertise.  Considerable effort and resource is being made by employers to hire to meet their demands.

  • Remote and Hybrid Work: Remote and hybrid work options are becoming increasingly common in the digital sector.

  • Healthy Salaries:  An article in The Times 17th January highlights the buoyancy of salary and overall remuneration in the sector with many employers expanding and salaries of over £70,000 being the norm. https://www.thetimes.com/sunday-times-100-tech/tech-feature/article/tech-firms-hiring-plans-uk-8drpcdlch
